In the early years of the communities of Ward 40, people –
sharing the experience of opening up new subdivisions - knew
their neighbours. Probably knew everyone on the street.
People went to Church locally. They volunteered to lead the
local beavers, scouts and girl guides. They coached local teams
in baseball and hockey. They served on community associations
and put neighbourhood watch posters in their windows.
These early parents and children had a sense of living in a
unique neighbourhood with organizations and events that
supported a common adventure. However, over time, people moved
away. Cultural diversity developed. People became increasingly
more siloed in their lives and sought participation in
organizations and events outside of the community.
Slowly, the ties that had held people together and offered them
a common identity through local involvement began to fade and
disappear.
Norm believes that community life needs a boost. That –despite
our diversity- residents need to be reminded that they share a
piece of
Toronto
that is at its most
enjoyable when it is shared by neighbours they know, understand
and respect.
It’s in this light that Norm helps his communities come
together each summer in two picnics.
The Agincourt Community Picnic brings together the communities
north of the 401 and is usually held in Bridlewood regionnal
park. The Ellesmere Community Picnic brings together the
communities south of the 401 and is held in
Terraview-Willowfield
Park
.
Norm has helped residents with street parties and, smaller, more
local picnics in
Vrandenburg
Park
,
Leacock
Park
and
Bay Mills Blvd.
