Hi,
I’m Toronto City Councillor Norm Kelly.
I have the privilege of looking after 60,000 people living in
20,000 homes, spread across 10 communities in Ward 40,
Scarborough-Agincourt.
I am also charged – with 44 other people in
Canada
’s 6th largest government –
with running the 5th largest city in
North America
.
A
Hollywood
movie star once said that “It was hard
work becoming a star but it’s even harder work remaining a
star”.
That’s Toronto
today. With
a lot of hard work by immigrants over the past 200 years
Toronto
has emerged as
Canada’s municipal star.
But we no sooner became a Canadian
Star then the context that facilitated our rise changed so that
we now compete for success with international stars – some of
them established old stars like
Chicago
and
Hong Kong
and some of them new, like Shanghai
and
Charlotte,
North Carolina
.
In short, unlike some, I don't believe that
Toronto
is a city in decline.
But it is at the crossroads.
And the decisions made by Councillors and the members of
the other orders of government will go a long way to determine
the future prosperity of our city and the quality of life in our
communities.
This website is an effort to outline my thoughts and proposals
that will help you identify our challenges and choose among our
responses.
I hope you find this exercise informative and enjoyable.
Sincerely,
Norm Kelly
