| The
Bridlewood Community |
Its boundaries are: Finch Avenue
to Sheppard
Avenue; Pharmacy
Avenue to Warden.
The Bridlewood community was named in
recognition of the horsefarm in that area run by Harry Hatch who
trained five King's plate winners in the 1930's and 1940's. The
large covered quarter mile racetrack was situated on the north-east
corner of Sheppard and Pharmacy until it was demolished for the
development of Bridlewood.
Most of the community
is comprised of handsome homes on large lots on heavily treed,
winding streets. It has a strong sense of community. I consider
it Scarborough's "Leaside".
Well-looked-after
townhouses and condominium apartments are located in the north-east
portion. Major re-development is coming to Sheppard Ave. Which is
designated on the Official Plan as an "Avenue" (to be intensified
residentially and commercially).
The most famous
people associated with Bridlewood are Mike Myers of TV’s "Saturday
Night Live" fame (and the Shrek movies); Eric McCormick, star of
TV’s "Will and Grace" – both of whom grew up in the area – and Ben
Hepner, Canada’s leading tenor, and a member of Scarborough’s "Walk
of Fame", a resident of many years.
North of the community, at Warden and Finch, a proposal
was submitted 2 years ago to intensify the Bridlewood Mall site with
additional retail floor area and 8 residential buildings ranging in
height from 7 to 38 storeys and comprising a total of 1,370
residential units. Continued negotiations reduced the units to 975
and the height of the tallest building to 25 stories.*
The Schools in this community are:
North Bridlewood Jr.
Public School
and
Bridlewood
Jr. Public
School
The Bridlewood community is blessed
with three parks and four churches. The Parks are:
North Bridlewood Park , Collingsbrook Parkette and
Bridlewood Park . The Churches are: Bridlegrove Bible Chapel, St Pauls'
L'Amoreaux Anglican Church, The Bretheren in Christ Church, and
Warden Full Gospel Assembly Pentecostal.
